Highland Games

are traditional competitions originating in the highland areas of Scotland and still held there and in other parts of the world where Scots have settled. The competitions are best known for traditional competitive athletic heavy events.

Tartan

A tartan is a specific woven pattern that often signifies a particular Scottish clan in the modern era. The pattern is made with alternating bands of coloured (pre-dyed) threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other. The resulting blocks of colour repeat vertically and horizontally in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines known as a "sett". Kilts almost always have tartans.

Sporran

a fur or leather pouch worn at the front of the kilt as part of the traditional dress of Scottish Highlanders

Clan

Celtic social unit, especially in the Scottish Highlands, consisting of a number of families claiming a common ancestor and following the same hereditary leader.

Claymore

Large two-handed swords popular in Scotland during the 15th, 16th and the 17th centuries. Ranging in length from 50" to 72", they possessed handles that were 18" - 21" in length.

Haggis

A national dish of Scotland, composed of the heart, liver and lungs of a sheep mixed with oatmeal, well seasoned and put into bags made from the paunch of the sheep. The haggis is then boiled for 2-3 hours and left to get cold. When required for use it is simmered again for about an hour and is traditionally served with mashed turnips, potatoes and whisky.

Bangers and mash

Bangers and Mash is sausages (bangers) served alongside mashed potato, often with gravy being poured over both.

Gaelic

Scottish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, or just Gaelic (Gàidhlig; IPA: ), is a member of the Goidelic branch of Celtic languages. The branch includes Scottish Gaelic, Irish and Manx, and is distinct from the Brythonic branch, which includes Welsh, Cornish, and Breton. Scottish Gaelic, Manx and Irish are all descended from Old Irish. The language is often described as Scottish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, or Gàidhlig to avoid confusion with the two other tongues.
